The Nigeria Labour Congress was forewarned on Tuesday by the Labour Party leadership not to attempt to seize control of the political platform, citing their inability to remove the Julius Abure-National Working Committee as recently announced.
The party’s response was in response to the decision made on Monday during an Abuja stakeholders’ meeting by the NLC Political Commission.
The unionists nullified the national convention that reinstated Abure and his NWC members in the statement they issued following the event.
In order to fill the void until new officers are chosen in three months, the stakeholders announced that the congress would form a transition committee.
The NLC’s resolution also brought up the necessity of performing a forensic audit of the LP bank accounts, as demanded by Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, in response to charges of fraud, forgery, and corruption made against the party’s leadership.
But the party struck back on Tuesday, saying the NLC did not have the right to fire its cabinet.The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made this announcement in a statement titled “NLC, cohorts lack powers to sack legitimate leadership of Labour Party.”Ifoh characterized the stakeholders’ meeting as an unlawful gathering of a few disgruntled ex-party members and a few “social media tigers” who are not officially registered LP members.”The NLC Political Commission is a front for Comrade Joe Ajaero, whom he has empowered for the aim of pursuing his political ambition come 2027,” the speaker declared.
Since the Labour Party is unaware of the group, it is unable to call a meeting of “stakeholders” for deliberation, let alone make decisions that could legally bind the party’s leadership. “Ajaero has given the group instructions to make sure that the Labour Party’s crisis worsens before the 2027 election by positioning the organization as a gathering place for dissident former members who recently lost the legal battle for leadership.”
We are also aware of the political agreement that the NLC leadership has made with the federal government, which is currently led by the All Progressives Congress, in order to weaken the opposition.
This explains why all of their schemes to seize control of the party leadership fell through so quickly. First, it tried to introduce and inaugurate an unauthorized Board of Trustees, but that too failed. Next, it tried to picket the party illegally. Once more, the scheme to seize control of the party through a stakeholders meeting with ex-members, social media influencers, and outsiders will collapse like a house of cards.
It is important to note that the harsh economic conditions imposed by the current government are causing suffering for Nigerians. On the receiving end are laborers and those who are oppressed.
Employers continue to engage in unfair labor practices as we speak, but the Nigerian Labour Congress has not acted decisively to defend workers’ rights. We would like to remind Comrade Joe Ajaero that he is putting off doing a lot of work for the Nigerian workers in order to deal with politics.
This is the reason we previously suggested that if he wanted to get into politics, he should step down as NLC President first.
